At least two dead in blast at Bolivia military barracks

At least two people have been killed following an explosion at a military barracks in Viacha, Bolivia, on September 5, 2026. The Bolivian Defence Minister, Ernesto Justiniano, reported that at least 81 individuals were injured in the blast, which occurred around 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT). Fourteen people are still unaccounted for, raising concerns that the death toll may increase.

Health official Rita Nebraska indicated that between 10 and 15 fatalities are anticipated. The explosion, which damaged numerous homes in the vicinity, is believed to have been caused by the detonation of pyrotechnic materials stored at the barracks, where an artillery regiment is stationed.

Colonel Antonio Amaru, the base commander, confirmed that among the missing are a sergeant and 13 conscripted soldiers aged between 18 and 19 years. Authorities have declared a risk of further explosions and advised the public to maintain a distance of at least 150 meters from the military base.

President Rodrigo Paz expressed his condolences to the families affected and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted. The local authorities in Viacha have declared three days of mourning in response to the tragedy.
