Green Party Deputy Leader Linked to Rental Properties Amidst Anti-Landlord Stance

Mothin Ali, the deputy leader of the Green Party, is associated with two buy-to-let properties through his company, MA Holdings. The properties were acquired in June 2022 and March 2025, prior to the Green Party's official policy to phase out private landlords by October 2025. Although Ali is the sole director of MA Holdings and holds over 75% of its shares, he does not appear to profit from these properties.

The Green Party has stated that Ali's actions are in the interest of vulnerable family members for whom he has caring responsibilities. The party's policy, adopted at its annual conference, aims to regulate the private rental sector and increase council housing to address the housing crisis. This includes measures such as rent controls and the end of buy-to-let mortgages.

Ali's connection to the properties was first reported by the Times, and the previous owner of one property confirmed it was purchased with the intention to be rented out. A Green Party spokesperson emphasized that Ali supports the party's policy, which seeks to impose more regulations on private rentals rather than abolishing landlords outright. The spokesperson also noted that personal information regarding Ali's family circumstances has been shared confidentially with the media to protect their privacy.
