UK Welcomes Dissolution of Syrian Democratic Forces into Central Government Structures

The United Kingdom has welcomed the recent announcement regarding the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces into the central government structures, viewing it as a crucial step towards achieving a peaceful and unified Syria. This statement was made by Ambassador Kate Foster, the UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, during a meeting of the UN Security Council.

Ambassador Foster highlighted the importance of Secretary-General Guterres’ visit to Damascus, which she described as a milestone in Syria's political recovery and a sign of strengthening relations between the Syrian government and the United Nations. The UK reiterated its commitment to supporting Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty as the government works to enhance its institutions.

The statement also acknowledged the direct talks between Israel and Syria held in Jordan, which were characterized as a positive development towards long-term peace in the region. However, the UK expressed concern over recent military strikes in Idlib, warning that such actions could jeopardize the progress made in Syria.

In remembrance of the Ghouta attack, which occurred thirteen years ago and resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people due to the use of chemical weapons, the UK reaffirmed its opposition to chemical weapons and emphasized the need for accountability.

Despite the positive developments, the UK noted that significant challenges remain, with over 15 million people in Syria requiring humanitarian assistance and more than 7 million facing acute food insecurity. The UK called for continued international support to help Syria move towards stability and recovery.
