Zelensky Expects War to Persist into Winter Following US Envoy Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that he expects the war with Russia to continue into the winter, following talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv. The discussions, which took place after the envoys met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, did not result in any major breakthroughs.

Zelensky emphasized the need for a just peace that would prevent any future aggression from Russia. Witkoff described the talks in Kyiv as "substantive" and expressed encouragement about the discussions. He noted that the negotiators had made significant progress in their previous meetings with Putin.

During the talks, Zelensky called for a trilateral meeting involving Russia and the US to further explore potential resolutions. He highlighted the necessity for Ukraine to bolster its air defense and energy support as the conflict is likely to persist through the winter months. Ukraine has been relying on American-made Patriot interceptors to defend against Russian missile strikes, but concerns have been raised regarding the availability of these systems due to ongoing military commitments elsewhere.

The discussions in Kyiv followed a series of closed-door meetings that lasted several hours. Zelensky stated that officials from Ukraine, Europe, and the US would convene soon to continue the dialogue. He also noted that the US is expected to increase production of military equipment next year, which Ukraine is counting on to enhance its defense capabilities.
