Crackdown on Illegal Number Plates with New Government Funded Roads Policing Team

The UK government has launched a new initiative to combat illegal number plates through the National Roads Policing Coordination Centre (NRPCC). This center will facilitate collaboration among police forces across England, enabling them to share intelligence and utilize advanced technology to detect illegal number plates more effectively.

Illegal number plates are frequently used by criminals to evade penalties for speeding, parking, and other offenses. They are also associated with organized crime, including the transportation of illegal goods. The NRPCC will trial new technologies, such as specialized goggles designed to read number plates that have been altered to evade detection.

The initiative is part of the government's Road Safety Strategy, the first comprehensive strategy in over a decade, which aims to save thousands of lives. The strategy includes proposals for stronger penalties for drivers using illegal number plates and a review of number plate standards.

Roads Minister Justin Madders emphasized the importance of this crackdown, stating that illegal number plates contribute to various crimes, including drug trafficking. He indicated that the government is committed to enhancing road safety and ensuring that offenders are held accountable.

Chief Superintendent Marc Clothier, Deputy National Coordinator for the NRPCC, highlighted the effectiveness of a targeted approach in addressing road safety risks and supporting compliance among drivers. The initiative aims to improve national coordination and communication among policing agencies and the broader road safety community.

Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones reiterated that illegal number plates are not a victimless crime, as they facilitate criminal activities and hinder law enforcement efforts. The government is determined to provide police with the necessary resources to combat serious and organized crime while enhancing road safety for all users.
