UK Forces Join Trilateral Arctic Exercise in Strategic High North Operation

UK Armed Forces, including Royal Marine Commandos and personnel from the Royal Air Force, have deployed to the remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen as part of Operation Atlantic City. This operation, which ran from August 26 to September 4, 2026, aimed to assess NATO's ability to operate in the challenging Arctic environment, characterized by extreme weather and difficult terrain.

The exercise involved collaboration with the Royal Norwegian Navy, the Norwegian Home Guard, and US Marine Corps units, integrating various sensor and communication systems to enhance NATO's preparedness for potential threats. Jan Mayen is strategically located in the Norwegian Sea, approximately 620 miles from mainland Norway, and plays a crucial role in the defense of northern Europe and the Euro-Atlantic area.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the importance of the High North for the security of the UK and NATO allies, highlighting the operation as a demonstration of the strong partnership between the UK, Norway, and the United States. The exercise also coincided with naval maneuvers during Operation Northern Viking 26, allowing for the optimization of maritime and sensing resources across the European theatre.

This operation builds on previous Allied training conducted around Jan Mayen and provides UK forces with essential experience in maritime operations, surveillance, and joint operations under extreme conditions. The challenges of distance, severe weather, and limited infrastructure in the High North necessitate meticulous planning and adaptability from the participating forces.
